Q&A: What’s involved in an Elevator Modernization?

Gabe Matherly · August 8, 2021 · Leave a Comment

A visitor living in an apartment building asks us what an elevator modernization is and whats involved when completing one.

It’s the process of updating and upgrading an existing elevator system. This generally includes replacing old equipment with new, more advanced technology, as well as making improvements to the elevator’s safety, reliability, and energy efficiency. The project will generally last for a couple of weeks for a small hydraulic system, but can take a few months for a high-rise traction elevator.

Here’s a general look at what will happen during your project:

Your elevator modernization will start with a thorough evaluation of the existing system. It’ll include inspecting the equipment, looking at the elevator’s usage patterns, and identifying any areas that may be in need of improvement. Once the evaluation is complete, a plan for the modernization is developed. This includes identifying the specific upgrades and improvements that will be made to the elevator, as well as a timeline for the project.

One of the most important aspects of an elevator modernization is replacing old equipment with new, more advanced technology. This can include replacing the elevator’s control system, communications system, drive system, hydraulics, wiring and other components. The process can also include updating the look and feel of the elevator cab (what the rider sees and touches). This might include replacing the flooring, walls, and ceiling, as well as adding new lighting and other features to enhance the ride experience. Modernization will also include upgrading the safety features to ensure that your elevator is as safe as possible. This can include adding new sensors, emergency brakes, backup batteries, and other safety devices (such as door sensors and interlocks) to the elevator.

Once the modernization is complete, the elevator will thoroughly tested to ensure that it is working properly and safely. This includes testing the elevator’s control and drive systems, as well as performing a load test to ensure that the elevator can handle the weight of passengers to the capacity of the elevator.

After the elevator is modernized, regular maintenance is important to ensure that it continues to work properly and safely. This includes regular inspections, testing, and replacement of worn or outdated components.

It’s imperative to note that only qualified technicians are permitted to perform this type of work by law. Very simply, this is not a project to be taken on by laymen.
